In the pile of “Money Nissan should have spent instead of building failing poorly reviewed Infintis” of poor decisions Japanese companies have been making, losing their performance image, of the past 10 years.

Seriously. Look at the American and German brands that the Japanese were ruining the image of from the 70s-90s. They collectively have the current GTI, Focus ST, Fiesta ST, Mustang, Focus RS, Golf R, Camaro, etc. Sure the Mustang and Camaro existed in the 90s but they are VASTLY superior for pennies on the dollar now. Seriously, every single one of those cars is not only superior but VASTLY so than the Japanese equivalent. And that’s just the shit in the $30ks. If we go into $40k+ it gets even more embarrassing until you hit the supercars. I remember when a Lexus and cars like the Supra were considered BMW fighters. Now a GS350 or whatever isn’t considered even close to a BMW. The Infiniti Q50 is considered lifeless to drive.

They have fallen hard into malaise. It’s sad too because the yen is cheap to the dollar like back when they were REALLY going hard in the late 80s and early 90s.

I mean the only car I can think of that is worth is over the competition is the GTR. Even then it’s Audi R8 prices now.

What’s funny is that their cars from back then are superior than their current offerings in several examples. Like cross marque the Silvia and Skyline GTS-T is a superior car to the Scion FRS. A Skyline GTS-T, adjusted for inflation, cost the same as a decently optioned FRS does now. Even within Toyota the MR2 Turbo or the Beams 3SGE version I would much rather have than a FRS. IDK if it’s measurably a superior car, like the Silvia is to the FRS, but mid engine, turbo, excellent handling.... it must be. It is a virtually identical car, in purpose, size, and class to both of those that debuted in the fucking 80s and still is an inferior product. At least Toyota offers a car like that now.

The only Japanese company I can think of that makes a sporty car superior to a past product is Mazda. The ND vs NA miata. However they have 0 mazdaspeed products now, none caught in testing even, and no equivalent to a RX7. This is aside Supercars.... though a GTR in Japan in 1989 cost $28,000 which is $55k in today’s money. Half of what that car costs now.

If you search on Autotrader there are about a dozen across the US. Most have rusted away or have been recycled into Toyota, Hyundai and Kia.
